Transforming Trauma into Hope:
Grief Heroes Donations Make a Difference in Students' Lives
Amidst the challenges of COVID-19, we initiated our pilot school donation project; it could not have come at a better time.
In 2020, we launched a pilot project by donating Grief Heroes Kits to 525 teachers and school counselors from 18 elementary schools in the Putnam District in Oklahoma City.
Due to COVID-19 and showing that 93% of teachers have never received grief education, we wanted to support one of the poorest school districts in the US.
The Grief Heroes Kits included interactive grief workbooks for elementary students in three different languages, as well as guidelines for adults. We offered online training to teachers and school counselors on how to best utilize our tools.
Our inexpensive yet effective Grief Heroes Kits have had a profound impact, and we continue to measure the outcomes of our efforts.
The response from families and school professionals has been profound. From the feedback we received, our goal is now clear: we will develop a platform and digitize our books and resources to make them accessible for grieving families and school districts nationwide.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, co-founder and author Andy Binau became a spokesperson in the media on the topic of grief.

Our History: Mother and son on a mission to help grieving children heal
The Grief Heroes Foundation was founded by Susan, a woman who faced a pivotal moment in her life in October 2006 Just days after celebrating her son's second birthday, she diagnosed with stage three colon cancer.
This experience tested her strength and resilience, leading her to discover a depth of courage she never knew she possessed. Susan's transformative journey marked the beginning of her mission to help others navigate critical illness and give back to the community.
After loss of a friend to brain cancer in 2013, Susan's son Andy joined his mother's mission. Since then, the mother-son duo has been on this mission together, helping grieving families in their community and beyond. They have shared stages internationally to share their story and inspire others to find the courage to face their own challenges.
